Ever since i’ve been little, i’ve been terrified of butterflies and moths..Supposedly i was part of the moth-man-proficies when i was a child..spirits would come to me in the form of moths and ask me to make peace with other people since they couldnt because they had passed on. I dont remember this, but thats one conclusion that experts have come up with. When there is a moth or butterfly near me, i hyperventalate, cry, and sometumes pass out. I can’t look at pictures of them or even cartoon ones. I have terrible nightmares about them..and when i think about them i get freaked out. I don’t know what to do.

as a child i had mild lepidophobia but as i grew up and studied them i grew out of that phobia now i rarely see them anymore. problem solved. i won’t catch them live and make collections from them i’m too destructive. go to a museum and see their collections and you’ll find them colorfull. if that fails to treat your phobia then you need psychiatric help more than i do. p.s. theres a new species of butterfly that sucks blood it’s the aggresive vampire butterfly they’re coming to the states boo!man kind is dooooomed!

  4. Rhonie Says:

I realised I was afraid of butterflies/moths/small flapping objects when my mother took me to a butterfly house when I was about five. Needless to say she had to carry me (screaming and in the fetal position) out the fire exit.

  5. Sophie Says:

Im 16 and have been told i’m weird because every time i see a butterfly i go nuts and start to scream and run away! I got taken to Melbourne zoo and started to cry and get freaked out! People had to ascort me out yelling ‘coming though’! this was only last year!!!

I hate butterflies, moths AND larvae. i have my own theory of how evil butterflies and moths are. the general public doesn’t know, but they need to. i was locked out of my room for 2 days b/c i thought an albino moth was in my vent. and i’m not gonna go into how many times i’ve had to ask my roomate to unlock the door and kill a moth that was sittin on top of the doorframe. They are hideous!

i always thought i was weird. there is a lady at my work who is scared of butterflies, but not moths. i am scared of moths and not butterflies ! i don’t know why, but i remember when i was a little girl my dad cut down a gum tree in our front yard and it had one of those big hairy moths on it. i thought it was pretty so he put it on my arm so i could pat it. when he put it on my arm i could feel it’s feet walking on my skin and it was the most godawful feeling i have ever felt and i still shudder to this day to think about it (actually i try not to) so i started crying and screaming and shaking my arm to get it off and my dad just laughed, he thought it was hilarious. but it really affected me deeply and i don’t think i’ve ever quite got over it.
to this day i can’t even look at a picture of a moth without starting to get all fluttery in my chest and freaky in my head. and if one actually flies in the window i scream and cry and get really shaky and i run a mile and barricade myself somewhere “safe” until it’s dealt with. and even when i know it’s gone i just keep looking everywhere in the room for them, paranoid it’s still there and i have trouble sleeping. i have been known to sleep on the couch if a moth was in my room – even if it’s been gotten rid of ! it’s like a violation.
i don’t know what life would be like to be without this fear, i’ve never thought about it because it would almost be too much to hope for ! i once spent all weekend in my flat because i couldn’t go out because there was a giant big moth that had died and was in the driveway outside. it can be very constraining and peopel don’t understand. i mean, i don’t understand it ! i’m not a fearful person in any other way but moths just send me into meltdown …

I lived in Panama and there are these huge black butterflies i mean, they’re enormous and once i was outside, i was about 7, and one of them was flying around and it started to like chase me! I dont know if it was just me going nuts or if it actually WAS chasing me. The thing is that in panama it’s so hot that sometimes the door expands with the heat, so i basically rammed into the door trying to open it becuase it wouldn’t budge. I started to cry becuase the door wouldn’t open fast enough.

  9. Sam Says:

Wow I’m not alone in being scared of moths and butterflies – butterfly farms are the scariest places on earth I’m sure

  10. Lisa Says:

One time at freshman band camp, we were learning how to stand at attention, where you stand perfectly still and you don’t move. Well we were all at attention while the section leader was talking, and this hideous butterfly comes flying towards me, and i ran. luckily the section leader thought it was funny and didnt make me run laps.

I don’t know when it started, but ever since I was little…I’ve always had a fear of butterflies and moths! I can’t stand them, the way the look or feel. When I see one coming near me (either species btw) I freak out and make a mad dash for cover. My family thinks it’s hilarious and unbelieveable that I have this fear. Why me? However, I think I’m slowly getting better…at running away from them. Hey, if it worked for running laps during P.E. class then so be it…Man, I’m an odd duck. Anyway, it’s nice to know that I’m not alone in this having this fear.

  15. Kirsten Says:

I’m 18 years old, almost 19, and I am so afraid of butterflies/moths and caterpillars. I’ve never liked any insects but the first time my family took me to the Butterfly Garden at the zoo, I’ve hated the fluttery bugs with a passion. Now, for fun, my friends try to drag me through the garden, but now I have an armspan wide enought o grip the sides of the door, that way they can’t get me in. But lately, they’ve resorted to holding my arms in. Of course, the last time they put me in there, I couldn’t leave because there were giants caterpillars at each door!! Ew, I can’t even think of butterflies. Gross Gross

  16. christopher Says:

my fear started when i was about 10 and i got a microscope for xmas. i found a big dead moth in my garage, and i wanted to look at it as a specimen. so i cut it open, and when i did, it was a hollow body and it crunched really loud. and a couple weeks after that i smashed a moth on the wall, and a bunch of dust like stuff was on my hand and it just disgusted me.

when a moth is flying, i either faint or just fall on the ground and start flailing my arms. the only time i fainted was when i saw a moth about 6 inches wide outside my house.

    i feel your pain.

  17. Melissa Says:

i know that it seems weird but the fact that i am not the only one with a fear of live butterflies. i have always been afraid of butterflies for some reason, the way they flutter at you, and then when they land on you. they are repulsive, i work at the local zoo here and i was laughed at when i told then i couldn’t work in the butterflie dome. i had to quit that job, although i do enjoy working with animals. does anyone else have a fear of spiders too? i do and i am deathly afraid of them, so i am wondering if anyone else is too.

  18. Amy Says:

I have been afraid of butterflies and moths since I was a small child, and it has grown worse as I have grown.
When I was pledging a sorority in college we had a meeting in the science buidling, and we had to sit in a hallway where dead butterflies and moths were pinned in cases. In the end, the actives had to move the meetings because I physically could not walk down the hallway.

  19. stacey Says:

i think my fear started when i was 6 or 7,my mum took me to a butterfly house-i just thought they were freaky and ran out.everytime one comed near me now i just run as far as possible,my friends think i’m weird

  20. meekmeek Says:

Oh my goodness, I thought I was the only person in the whole wide world who goes nuts when I see a butterfly or a moth!!! I think they are crucial, and I hate to see them come! No matter where I am, I will run like crazy and jump on folks I don’t know when I see them. They make me nervous, they make me cry, they make me wonder why? I pray that I get over the fear of them, or either they vanish into thin air one day really soon, but as reality kicks in, I know that won’t happen.
